Achernar

Achernar


Once upon a time, I dreamt a fantasy of a second life, set in a science fiction universe. I constructed space ships, and invented worlds, and people who lived in them.



OK, at that time I had no idea of astrophysics, and so I took Alpha Eridani, also known as "Achernar" (145 lightyears away), simply from its impressive name. Today I know: this blue giant sun does not even shine long enough to have planets, and would definitely not bear inhabitable worlds.



But IF it had... it would look like this. In the left you see the blueish ellipsoid of Achernar, the flattest known star of the Milky Way, and in the right the bigger partner of a hypothetical twin planet. And if I was a citizen of this beautiful world, I would chill here on the beach, after work. Just don't forget the sun screen!
